Rearranging the Historical Trade Area

"Banjarmasin City is a city that has characteristics and potential that can be proud of. Banjarmasin has always relied on two aspects: the potential of rivers and the potential of trade and services, which is also a characteristic or identity of Banjarmasin. In fact, Banjarmasin was known as the biggest trading center in Kalimantan some time ago, many buyers came from other cities in Kalimantan to shop in Banjarmasin"

Judging from the geographical characteristics of the city of Banjarmasin, which is surrounded by rivers that have long been used as a connecting line between and within and outside the city, the trade area is focused on being on the edge of the river to spur city growth, so that the city has an attractive magnet for migrants and traders .

Talking about the trade area which began to erode the flow of modernization, then remembered the biggest trading center in Banjarmasin some time ago, the center of the historical trade area consisting of Sudimampir Market, Harum Manis Market, Ujung Murung Market, to Pasar Lima area. Judging from the conditions since decades, not much has changed. Old buildings in this area also have not changed much, even though this area was once a trade icon on the island of Borneo, now it looks worse and worse without the existence of good management and empowerment by various parties. Other conditions regarding parking that is still on the road, sidewalks and pedestrian conditions for pedestrians are increasingly eroded by street vendors, so that visitors' comfort becomes disturbed. Not to mention that when it rains, this area will feel increasingly cramped, narrow, even "calap" ( flooded). Market management is still conventional and not creative to trigger the main potential of this trading area. If only the stakeholders can dig deeper and do a good mapping of the potential of this region, then the process of structuring and optimizing the aesthetics of this area can be more strategic. Especially in increasing the comfort of the infrastructure of the market area, so visitors will increasingly come either to shop or just as visitors (travelers) which of course can increase regional income and economic potential in Banjarmasin.

Not many changes have occurred in this region since a few years ago, more changes have occurred to the addition of shops and traders, and the expansion of parking areas. Whereas the pattern of this area if arranged properly will increase its own attractiveness, even more so with the potential of the area which is on the banks of the river. Seeing this condition, it seems that the traders still feel comfortable to do activities in the region, even though without the awareness gradually the quality of this area will be increasingly reduced and mechanical by the times and lifestyle of modern society.

If this area is formatted with proper, gradual, and sustainable planning as well as the optimization of the area so that it can create a new face in this area which of course not only increase visitors but also increase regional income and the potential of Banjarmasin as a trade and service center will be increasingly know.

Potentials that can be developed in regional planning, for example, by structuring the market based on the merchant category, are made in several blocks consisting of convention blocks, accessories blocks, electronic blocks, glasses blocks, etc., and can also be equipped with several upgrades in this market with a special place for traders who sell food (foodcourt) so that it is more organized and migrants can enjoy eating in this area. Besides that, access to and from the river route is also made to attract visitors to come to this area.

Of course it is not easy to optimize this region, it is necessary to have an understanding of all parties with the same goals and can understand each other to agree together in managing and developing this region for mutual comfort from various sides.

Planning for regional planning has been planned for a number of years, several stakeholder meetings have also been held, and even the city government has reportedly made a DED for the area structuring phase. Of course the process is still very long, until now also still looking for mutual agreement between the government, traders, and shop owners. Socialization and education has also been carried out by the Banjarmasin City Industry and Trade Department.

Regarding relocation, it has not been done temporarily only in the form of proposals and there is no exact location related to the relocation of traders, for the time being, several proposals have been submitted, namely in the Sudimampir parking area, the ex presidential cinema area, and the plaza partner parking area. A team from the Banjarmasin city government has also been formed, consisting of three teams, namely the data collection team that has been carried out since February 2019, the information dissemination team and the relocation team. The last time I heard about the rearrangement plan will start in 2020.
