The Role of ICT in Education During Covid19

The globe is currently gripped by the deadliest and most widespread pandemic it has faced in over a century. In the midst of this turmoil, ICT has undoubtedly played a significant role in providing all the required information. With the availability of technology, we are not only able to manage the businesses but are also able to maintain the connectivity with our teachers, colleagues, families and friends. With the closure of worldwide universities and schools, with the help of technology and collaboration tools students are engaged and are able to continue with their studies, can talk to their friends, can play virtual games, do exercise etc.

Entering the 21st century is a good time to remember the past, consider the present, and plan for the future. The last century made many changes in various aspects, especially in the world of education, where at that time education emphasized increasing human resources to face future challenges. Increasing the quality of education from year to year is growing, both in terms of facilities, teaching staff, and curriculum.

In the 21st century, every nation in the world has increased its human resources, especially in the field of education in order to compete with other countries. Education in the 21st century is about giving students the skills they need to be successful in this new world, and helping them develop the confidence to practice those skills. With so much information available to them, the skills of the 21st century are more focused on understanding that information, sharing it, and using it in smart ways. Educational Testing Service (ETS) in its publication, Digital Transformation: A literacy Framework for ICT Literacy (2007), defines learning abilities in the 21st century, namely the ability to a) collect or retrieve information, b) organize and manage information, c) evaluating the quality, relevance and usefulness of information, and d) producing accurate information through the use of existing resources. The P21 Coalition (Partnership for 21st Century Learning) has identified four "skills for the moment" namely, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration.

Meanwhile, digital integration is also the basis for comprehensive education in the 21st century, it is not enough to just add technology to existing learning. Technology should be used strategically to gain student understanding and benefit students. The use of technology in the 21st century is about how people learn best by making use of various emerging technologies, such as computers, cell phones, and web 2.0. In supporting digital literacy in learning, things that must be done are designing flexible learning opportunities, placing learning opportunities in an authentic context, reviewing how technology is integrated into the curriculum, supporting students to use their own technology and developing effective strategies for learning with technology, use assessment and feedback to encourage innovation in learners, value exploration as a process, empower students to navigate increasingly complex learning landscapes, and support student self-assessment.
